Men cannot give birth
Guns don’t kill people; people kill people
A fetus is a human being
Socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried
Discriminating against white people is racism
I agree with four out of five. A fetus is human life, but it isn't a human being.
Anyway, I had no idea who Carmack is; I've never been much of a gamer. And BasedCon is a fine name for a convention.
That is a mostly unsurprising list. This is rehashing discussions that have been had dozens of times, but I'd like to make some comments on the list, out of order because that's how my brain is working tonight.
Discriminating against white people is racism
I suspect what they consider discrimination is an absolutely wild list. Apropos of nothing, I wonder how they feel about women in the military?
Socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried
So far so has unregulated capitalism. Turns out you kind of need guard rails. Perhaps a hybrid. Weird, huh?
Anyway, welcome to late-stage capitalism, where not having any innate talents will soon be criminalized and doom you to charity or jail time. All because helping people, educating them, or making sure the disadvantaged have a minimum standard of living and health care has been redefined as communism. After all, why should we pay people a living wage for cleaning the bathroom when we can just complain about how no one wants to work anymore instead!
A fetus is a human being
Sure. In the same way that a fertilized egg is a chicken. But if you fry that thing before its been under a hen for four days no one is going to accuse you of having fried chicken.
People who are assigned male at birth is a different category than people identifying as a male gender. Most of my libertarianism may have been slowly stripped from me (as I kept seeing what happened when they get their way) but I have to say a pronoun doesn't hurt me one goddamn bit, so they can do whatever the hell they want.
For what its worth an awful lot of women can't give birth either, and a woman that has a hysterectomy doesn't cease being a woman. Chromosomes aren't as clear-cut as we were originally taught in freshman biology either.
Guns don’t kill people; people kill people
This response is long so I'm hiding behind a '» show previous quotes' despite the fact its not a previous quote.
Sure:
But I don't have to be happy about people having access to certain types of firearms, or being able to acquire them without some kind of test or background check. I mean, we restrict the concealed carry of knives that are over 3 inches long in many states. We have laws about slingshots inside some city limits. Homemade weapons are a completely weird field of law too.
In any case, the meaning of the second amendment was understood completely differently even during our own lifetimes, with the most significant changes to its interpretation occurring over the last 30 years. That has been by design, as lobbying has changed the 'originalist interpretation' into a meaningless phrase that just means "I think Thomas Jefferson would have thought a drum magazine on an AR-15 would have been awesome!"
In 1840, the Tennessee Supreme Court wrote the 2nd amendment's purpose is "the defense of the public" and mostly focuses on military use. A quote: "a hunter might carry his rifle every day for forty years, and yet it would never be said of him that he had borne arms; much less could it be said that a private citizen bears arms because he has a dirk or a pistol concealed under his clothes, or a spear in a cane."
Heck, in 1875, the Supreme Court held up the right of states to pass their own firearms regulations. (Though that was used mostly to disarm black Americans).
The 1930s? "The obvious purpose" of the 2nd amendment was "assure the continuation and render possible the effectiveness of a state militia" So weapon types that could be reasonably used by the common grunt couldn't be banned, but that still allowed for full automatic weapons bans, sawed off shotgun bans, etc etc etc.
For the next 40 years the NRA actually helped write weapons bans. Sure, some of it was race-based, but most of it was making sure that sportsmen would still have reasonable access to weapons while allowing reasonable restrictions. Unfortunately the reasonable people were all kicked out during the Revolt in Cincinnati (during an NRA convention in 1977) and the lobbying and power plays began in earnest.
Then we get modern times, where despite public support even reasonable restrictions get shot down. Instead we get feel-good things like bump-stock bans, and empty promises about mental health that just demonize the people that have mental health issues.
Welcome to the United States. Where our culture has become so poisoned that a thought like "let's ask teachers to carry handguns when we won't even let them teach sex-ed anymore!" is a thought that has become popular.

It's more an outgrowth of the last one - apparently the origin story of the convention is that it came from that whole sad puppy thing. Also a bit of gamergate - because naturally.
As for their list of grievances, the dumbest thing is that none of them even makes a claim about reality - they're all just whining about word usage. "The word 'man' only means the people I say it about, not the people you say it about!" It's the stuff of youtube comments.

I hate how the right will say these things to justify their position, because they are superficially true. They aren't used for their superficial truth, however. People say these as a straw-man attack on the other side (e.g. trans women cannot give birth, ergo they should not be allowed to call themselves women). Just because it is true does not in any way validate their argument. It's kindergarten reasoning.
Socialism has failed everywhere it’s been tried
True socialism has only been tried in a few instances, and in those few cases the implementation has been corrupt (U.S.S.R., Venezuela, etc.). China isn't a shining beacon of socialist utopia, as they are currently sliding into an authoritarian state; but you can't say it has "failed"... yet, anyway.
The majority of successful countries in the world are more socialised that the United States; and by most objective measures, the United States does not compare favourably.
The Socialism thing is a straw man, too. Every form of government ever tried has failed eventually, and every government currently in operation is said to be failing - by the opposition.
There have been some headlines lately about big companies leaving Twitter due to their ads and posts showing up next to offensive content on the platform.
Twitter has been denying this of course. So... Media Matters developed a test. Them publishing their story on the test resulted in these tweets:
(For what its worth, independent news stories have confirmed that antisemitism and other offensive content has been going up in frequency, not just recently but since Musk's acquisition).

Right? What is he expecting to win? Even if a court forces them to honor previous contracts, no company is going to sign a new contract (or extend an existing one) if that actually happens.

I will say, I do miss being able to read entire threads of shitposting. I can only see direct links to single posts now, with zero context. I absolutely refuse to sign in (or create an account) to read them so I settle for other people's screenshots for now.

Yeahhh I've been relying on alternate URLs for embeds in places like Discord, ever since he broke those. Probably a tracking nightmare, but I'm just sharing meme-y trash anyway.
Comments
I'm going to admit that I'm not actually sure what they're trying to say with this image.
I thought I knew, but the dudes in the sea of piss and shit have me at a loss.
So raise your hand if you had "teh carmack headlines an alt-right edgelord sci-fi con" on your 2023 bingo card.
It can NOT be called BasedCon. I refuse to believe it, even ironically. Just no. Fuck off you goddamn Nazi's you've killed satire.
Anyway....
Carmack being in the same sentence as alt-right is not surprising. Unfortunately. Its easy to believe he forgot who the bad guys were in Wolfenstein.
That said, John Romero being alt-right would surprise me. I just cant imagine him getting that involved.

It's a sci-fi con whose "About" page is entirely about identity politics. Sorry, but that is the dumbest shit imaginable.
I'm considering going trans and getting a uterus implanted just so I can be the first trans woman to get an abortion
I will be rich!!!
It does get me wondering: Will this eventually morph into yet another alt-right attempt to take down the Hugo awards?
If so I don't know if I'll laugh my ass off or start crying about how this shit never ends. Sad puppies never die they just try something new.
